I will add that players of the modern, silver, Boehm-system flute are most welcome in the class.

7:15 - 9:15 PM.
$20 admission fee.
Call (812) 988-1180 to reserve a space in the workshop.
Email: kbarn@sprynet.com
This workshop is for beginning-level players of the tin whistle, one of the most popular instruments of traditional Irish music. One of the best things you can do for yourself as a beginner is to form good habits right away, avoiding pitfalls that you would have to unlearn later. Bring a whistle in the key of D, or purchase one at the store. We'll explore the rudiments of playing, including holding the instrument in a relaxed way, fingering, breathing and phrasing. We'll learn a few simple melodies, and we'll take a first look at Irish ornamentation techniques. No music reading is necessary, though some free handouts will be available. Becoming familiar with the sounds of traditional Irish music before attending the workshop will be very helpful. Feel free to bring an audio recorder if you wish. My books will be available to purchase at the workshop: The Essential Tin Whistle Toolbox  and The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle. If you wish to view free excerpts from these books, you may do so at here.

GREY LARSEN Workshop: Beginning Tin Whistle
10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Elderly Instruments, 1100 N. Washington, Lansing, MI 48906. Here's a map to the store.
Phone: (517) 372-7890 or (888) 473-5810
Workshop fee: $35.00.
Designed for beginning tin whistle players, this workshop will help students form good habits and avoid pitfalls that would need to be undone later. Bring a whistle in the key of D, or buy one at Elderly. You should be able to get a basic sound from the whistle, and it will help if you know the fingerings and names of the notes, although this is not required. Nor is an ability to read music essential, although handouts will be available. The class will explore the rudiments of playing traditional Irish music, including breathing, phrasing, and ornamentation, with an emphasis on technique rather than repertoire. Listening to traditional Irish music before the workshop will be very helpful. Total novices are welcome to attend the workshop but it is not intended to cover the absolute basics of playing the whistle such as how to get sound from the whistle.

Traditional Style in Irish Music, for All Players, led by Grey Larsen and Cindy Kallet
This is a workshop for all players who love traditional Irish music, whether they play melody (fiddle, flute, tin whistle, concertina, accordion, tenor banjo, etc.) or accompaniment (guitar, harp, bodhrán, etc.). Together we will explore how to play Irish music together in a stylistically more aware and sensitive way. We'll look into rhythm, tempo, ornamentation, the nature of different dance tune types (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.), listening and group awareness, session etiquette, when not to play, among other topics. Why not make sessions even more fun?

The workshop is short - only one hour - so please tune your instrument beforehand if possible. Come prepared to play and listen, and feel free to bring an audio recorder. Grey and Cindy have played in many Irish sessions in the US and Ireland. Grey will have copies of his books available: The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle and The Essential Tin Whistle Toolbox. (See http://www.greylarsen.com/store/books.php).

Grey Larsen, Cindy Kallet and Mark Feddersen
Please join us for an evening of old-time music from the repertoire of fiddler Joe Dawson. This is traditional music from Monroe and Brown Counties, Indiana, played by Grey on fiddle, Cindy on guitar and Mark on banjo. We learned all of the music from Joe, born in 1928 in Bedford, Indiana. Joe started fiddling at the age of ten at his grandfather's knee. The music is beautiful, lyrical and mostly crooked, some tunes heard nowhere else, and settings of well-known tunes that are unique to this area.
No cover charge, donations appreciated, all ages welcome.

Grey's workshop: Exploring Irish Ornamentation for Flute and Whistle
"In this workshop we will explore my method of understanding and learning Irish ornamentation, as I have laid them out in my books The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle and The Essential Tin Whistle Toolbox. Key to this approach is regarding cuts and strikes as articulations and not as grace notes, an approach that has helped demystify ornamentation for many of my students over the last 20-plus years. Open to all levels, though beginners may not be able to immediately execute all the techniques that we explore. Audio recorders are welcome though, and you can take away material to work with later. To view free excerpts from my books, please click here. For other free materials, please visit The Irish Tune Bank."

Cindy's workshop: Making Your Own Arrangements. In this workshop, we'll investigate various approaches to crafting a guitar arrangement for a song: strum variations, chord inversions, using the right hand and left hand selectively, transitions. We'll look at some examples of accompaniments and figure out if they work for the song, and why. Bring a song or a tune for the group to brainstorm with! All levels welcome.

10:30 am to 12:30 pm: Beginning Irish flute and Tin Whistle
$30 (or $50 for both this and the following workshop).
This workshop is for beginning players of both Irish flute and tin whistle. One of the best things you can do for yourself as a beginner is to form good habits right away, avoiding pitfalls that you would have to unlearn later. Irish (wooden) flute and modern "Boehm system" flute players are both welcome. Whistle players need to bring a D whistle, and flutists can play tin whistle in the workshop if they prefer. You must be able to get a basic sound, and it will be very helpful if you know the fingerings and names of the notes. We'll cover the rudiments of playing traditional Irish music on these instruments, including breathing, phrasing and ornamentation. No music reading is necessary, though handouts will be available. Emphasis will be on technique over repertoire. Listening to traditional Irish music before attending the workshop will be very helpful.

1:30 pm to 3:30 pm: Intermediate Irish flute and Tin Whistle
$30 (or $50 for both this and the preceding workshop)
This workshop is for intermediate players of both Irish flute and tin whistle. Irish (wooden) flute and modern "Boehm system" flute players are both welcome. Whistle players need to bring a D whistle, and flutists can play tin whistle in the workshop if they prefer. You should be able to play at least a handful of Irish traditional tunes at a moderate speed. We will delve deeply into traditional Irish phrasing and ornamentation, as well as breathing strategies that enhance the phrasing and clarity of the music. No music reading is necessary, though handouts will be available. Emphasis will be on technique over repertoire.

Poems and Prose by Henry David Thoreau
Set to Music by Dillon Bustin and Grey Larsen

The performers were:
Dillon Bustin - Vocals
Grey Larsen - Wooden Flute and Tin Whistle
Evan Harlan - Piano
Diantha Millott - French Horn
Andrew Blickenderfer - Cello
Aaron Trant - Percussion
Alice Hunter - Dance (The Visitor Who Never Comes)

Twelve years ago, Dillon Bustin received a commission from the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, Massachusetts to do a staged adaptation of Walden. He composed a song cycle with monologues, closely following Thoreau's text, and asked me to arrange the music for an ensemble of wooden flute, piano, cello, French horn, and percussion.

I dove into this project with a great passion. Dillon's song melodies and lyric adaptations are so natural and gorgeous, and the lyrics represent to me a masterpiece of wisdom and insight. I found the challenge of bringing this inspired material into full bloom irresistible. In scoring the songs, I called upon my love of classical counterpoint and my decades of folk music experience to produce a score that integrates both. I dearly love this music.

The piece was first presented in Concord over a weekend in October 1993, complete with set, props, theatrical lighting, and dancers. I directed the musical ensemble and played the flute parts (as I will be doing on June 4th) on my 19th century wooden flute, the type of flute that Thoreau himself played.

Also in 1993 we performed the piece, and did a studio recording of it, in Bloomington, Indiana, where I live. That recording has not yet been issued. Since that time, Dillon has performed the cycle as a recital piece from time to time, usually with piano accompaniment, but it has not received the full treatment since 1993.

I feel that this collaboration with Dillon represents some of the very best musical work I have ever done. For years I have been hoping that Dillon and I could bring Songs from Walden Pond to a wider audience. I hope that this concert will be the first step in achieving that.

The performance on June 4th is sponsored by the Concord Poetry Center and Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts, where Dillon works as Executive Director. The Concord Academy Chapel is a beautiful, woody space with excellent
acoustics. We'll do a selection of the cycle in a casual concert format, without the narrative script but with comments between songs.

Also on June 4th, Dillon Bustin will give an afternoon workshop in which he will demonstrate how he has created musical settings of pieces by Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He will show how the lyrical sensibility led to the singer/songwriter phenomenon in the twentieth century, and how such techniques can be applied to blank verse and passages of prose.

Dillon's workshop will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Emerson Umbrella for the Arts, 40 Stow Street, Concord, MA. The workshop fee is $25.00. If you wish to attend both the workshop and concert, there is a reduced package price of $30.00 (a $5.00 savings). Please see http:// www.concordpoetry.org/tickets.html for information on procuring tickets.

Ceili bands play traditional dance music˜jigs, reels, hornpipes, marches and waltzes˜and feature piano accompaniment to melodic instruments such as fiddle, flute and tenor banjo. The instrumental lineup of the Limestone Ceili Band features Jamie Gans on fiddle, Sam Bartlett on banjo, Mike Casey and Mimi Vidaver on Irish flutes, and Grey Larsen on piano, flute and concertina.

Irish Tin Whistle For Beginners
11:30 AM - 1:30 PM ... $40
Here is a workshop for true beginners, even if you have never played a tin whistle before. Be sure to bring a tin whistle in the key of D, or buy one at the store when you arrive. I will get you off to an excellent start, steering you clear of forming any bad habits in holding and blowing the instrument. I will introduce you to the building blocks of Irish tin whistle ornamentation. Familiarity with Irish music will be a big plus, though not essential. If you are unfamiliar with traditional Irish music, please try to listen to some before the workshop. Music reading ability is not necessary. I will be using some materials from my upcoming book The Essential Tin Whistle Toolbox (coming out in mid-April). Free excerpts from this book are available at http://www.greylarsen.com/store/excerpts_toolbox.php. Audio recorders are fine, but no video recorders please.
Irish Flute & Tin Whistle--Intermediate
2:30-4:30 PM ... $40
This workshop will focus primarily on two areas: ornamentation and breathing (how to breathe, and how to create breathing opportunities in Irish tunes). Emphasis will be on technique over repertoire building. I feel that it is optimal to learn these techniques directly from a teacher. You can them apply what you learn in this workshop to the tunes you already know and the ones you will learn thereafter. I will use some materials from my new book, The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle, and copies will be available for purchase. (Free excerpts from the book are available at www.greylarsen.com/store/excerpts_essguide.php) Participants should bring a flute (wooden flute or modern, Boehm-system flute) or a tin whistle in the key of D. You must know the notes of the flute or whistle by name and know how to finger them, and be able to play at least a handful of tunes at a moderate speed. Familiarity with Irish music will be very helpful. Music reading ability is not necessary. Audio recorders are fine, but no video recorders please.
