Carbony Pennywhistles

We are particularly excited about the Big Bore Low Whistles with Close Finger Hole Spacing. At long last, people with hands of almost any size can easily play a low whistle.

The Carbony pennywhistles, from Carbony Celtic Winds, are our favorites of the fine handmade whistles. They follow in the footsteps of the legendary, highly sought-after (and rarely available) Michael Copeland whistles, in tone, response and conical-bore shape. Due to their carbon fiber bodies, Carbony whistles are virtually indestructible. Most of them are also very light in weight (just over one ounce for the high D).

If you can afford such a fine handmade whistle, we highly recommend them. They are very responsive and their tone is beautiful. When you view the pages below, you will be able to view videos of Grey Larsen demonstrating these whistles.

The mouthpiece/blade is machined from aluminum and anodized for hardness, creating a stiff precise blade for maximum oscillation. The tip/windway is machined from marbled ebonite, the same material used to make saxophone and clarinet mouthpieces. Safe to put in mouth and durable enough to honor the lifetime warranty. The interface of the carbon fiber body is precision ground to mate with the fipple to form a tuning slide required in all professional grade whistles.

We find the Leading Tone Whistles to be especially useful for traditional Irish and Galician music. They feature a seventh hole which permits playing the low leading tone, and provides a very convenient alternate fingering for the high leading tone.

Thumb holes are also available on all Carbony whistles, which enable options for the fingering the flat third (F on a D whistle) and the flat seventh (C on a D whistle).
