Grey learned these two traditional Irish tunes, a hornpipe and a reel, from his dear friend Co. Sligo flute player Tom Byrne (1920-2001). Tom told us that in Co. Sligo, when someone was leaving the country the community would through a goodbye party (often called the American wake) and someone would always play The Farewell Reel  as the final tune. This was the case for Tom when he emigrated to the US.
