On the day in April, 1986 that the U.S. dropped bombs on Tripoli, Libya, I was on my way to work, trying to make sense of the day’s events, when I drove past fraternity boys proudly displaying a spray-painted bed sheet: “US BOMB LIBYA INTO A PARKING LOT.” That evening, on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” following reports of Libya and its “Line of Death” in the Mediterranean Sea, there was an interview with an adventurer on his way to the North Pole who described chipping away 70 pounds of frozen sweat just to crawl into his sleeping bag.
