Soup grew out of Malcolm improvisations with a pair of wooden soup spoons he carved himself. Grey learned the traditional fiddle tune Banjo Tramp in the early 1970s from fiddler Ward Jarvis, who was well into his 80s at the time. Ward was from West Virginia but had settled in Athens, Ohio after working for many years in logging camps.
