Oud player and singer Vince Sawma was born in 1920 in Broumana, a village near Beirut, Lebanon. He learned the oud from his father and from another teacher in Lebanon. He moved with his family to Cincinnati in 1955. Vince worked as a hydraulics mechanic at Cincinnati Milacron, and served under General Patton at the invasion of Normandy, for which he earned a Purple Heart. Early on Vince played at weddings, picnics and other social gatherings of Middle-Eastern immigrants, and later for more general audiences and for belly dancing as that became more popular in the US.
