Grey wrote this duet to celebrate the birth of a beautiful boy, his grandson Shade. Its melodies and harmonies were born just a few weeks after Shade was, while Grey was composer-in-residence at the Ucross Foundation in wide-open, windswept northern Wyoming. Written for fiddle and fiola (our name for a violin strung with viola strings) it is imbued with the drive and sonority of traditional Scandinavian fiddling as well as counterpoint reminiscent of baroque music. Sheet music is available.
