Grey Larsen composed The Gathering not long after his 1980 visit to Norway during which he met numerous distant relatives on the shores of Oldenfjord, on the coast not far from Trondheim. It was a joyous reunion, his first contact with relatives of his Norwegian ancestors who had immigrated to South Dakota in the late 1800s.
